FEBRUARY 2014: Soil Stabilization + Improvement and Flood Plain Mitigation
Anticipated community impact: 3.5 of 5 (noise and trucks)
This month, we will be stabilizing the soil on site in preparation for foundation by installing aggregate piers, and through March 2014, we’ll be working to raise the site above the floodplain – up to 8 feet in some areas.
Soil Stabilization: As foundation preparation, large cylindrical holes will be drilled into the ground on site and stone will fill the holes and be compacted to stabilize the soil. Aggregate piers are the result of this process. There will be trucks bringing stone to the site, in addition to drilling. You will see heavy earth moving equipment. This process may start as early as the week of Feb. 3.
Flood Plain Mitigation: Our local earthwork subcontractor, Tennoca Construction, will be bringing fill dirt onto the site to raise it above the floodplain—up to 8 feet in some places.
Routing Fill Dirt on Riverside Drive: At our request, the vast majority of earth moving dump trucks will be using Riverside Drive, though some may have to navigate along Haywood or Amboy Roads at some point in the process.
The public comment period closes February 13, 2014. You can read the agreement at Pack Library in downtown Asheville or West Asheville library.
