Hold on a second! Beer in a can? From a purely palatable perspective, beer in a can never tastes as good as beer from a bottle (I can taste the metal).
And a company committed to the values of quality beer and quality fellowship should not sacrifice quality for production-cost reduction and savings.
Furthermore, beer from a can loses some of its honor as the can is associated with cheap, bad, beer. The bottle, though, is associated with quality, both in beer and in company.
But maybe that is just me... one who has standards, both personally, and palatabley (a new word, sorry, but I was going for an alliterative tone).
With much respect for Belgium beer (and less respect for cans, though),
Jeremy K.

I feel the same way. But They have all ready started making cans of Fat Tire and the reasoning behind it is in some place you can't have bottles. I don't know about you but I would rather drink Fat Tire in a can then not have a beer at all.
I'm all for seeing more New Belgium brews in a can. As we have seen with Fat Tire from NBB and all of the Oskar Blues brews, cans do work! I'd love to see 1554 put in a can or how about La Folie!!!
I saw and tried the fat tire beer in a can. I must say that I liked it! It was pretty good for beer in a can and I liked the price! Please make more! Everyone who came over and tried the fat tire in a can was also impressed! Great for hiking/backpacking or rafting trips!
2º Below is the best thing they've done since Fat Tire. If another beer is to be canned it should be 2º Below.
Also, it would be appreciated if New Belgium began distributing in Alaska.
Beer in a bottle is the way to go. BUT, if putting Fat Tire in a can means you can ship it to the Boston area... I'm on board. I haven't been able to have a Fat Tire in years; thus I've brewed a clone. I'll be sure to send you a BOTTLE.
Please please please NB, put Mothership Wit in a can, I'd drink it every Friday and probably more often than that!
Why is Fat Tire in this poll, you guys are already canning it! It's skewing the results!
I play in a recreational sports league and there is no glass allowed at the fields. This severely limits my ability to drink good beer. I occasionally go with Wittekerke Belgian White but I do love the MW much more!
Newer cans are lined so there is no metal to beer contact.
This is the same discussion and hoo hawing that happened in the wine industry when Screwtops starting showing up. Tradition vs convenience and other arguments...
I'd drink Mothership Wit more often if it was in cans, for sure! I can't bring glass bottles to our recreational league sports at city parks because glass containers are prohibited.
There should be a "None of the Above" or "No New Belgium Beer" option for which we'd like to see in a can. I'd vote for one of those. As for lining the cans...that sounds a lot worse than tasting aluminum.
"It was pretty good for beer in a can". Maybe for a beer in a can, but it was still in a can and not a superior beer in a bottle.
Oh, and to answer New Belgium's question, I would not like to see, nor taste, one of your beers in a can and to find out that you have committed such an atrocity makes me question your commitment to quality and taste.
Fat Tire and 1554 would both be my choice. Having Fat in a can is a good thing to me because every full moon a buddy and I take a late night mountain bike ride. I am the designated beer carrier because I am 80lbs bigger and can carry more weight. Try hauling 6 bottles of beer plus a hydration resevoir full of ice in a backpack while you're climbing some of the most technical trails around. Cans would be a lot lighter weight and easier to crush and carry out the empties.
i would say flat tire. But honestly, I think the bottle is better. Besides the good flavor, the design is beautiful. This is my first time drinking this beer, and I will definitely keep drinking it.
I guess flat tire is already in a can. I didnt see it because i guess i didnt even know about this beer until today. Now i know, but i still like the bottle.:)
Sure, I can KIND OF understand why you want to sell your beer in cans, but I for one will never buy it. I completely refuse to drink beer out of a nasty can. Call me a snob, but I know it makes beer taste like trash.
Everyone knows that bottles of Beer are much better then cans, But cans can be brought many more places. My main sport is sailing, and we can go around having glass bottles everywhere to be broken, so can is the choice of the thirsty.
Hmmm...let's think about this for a sec....going to the beach today; no glass allowed....cans of cheap, beer-scented-water types of beverage....cans of New Belgium...YES! New Belgium in a can! Finally I can take a good brew with me to the beach! Now can we get more of this in Michigan, please?
I did a taste test to see for my self. After all it was anouther reason for beer. I could taste the can if I drank dirrectly from the can, but if I poured the can in a glass it tasted the same as the beer from the bottle or growler. The final result, all were great!!!!!!!!!!!!! I took my blindfold off, and finished them all. The growler was the best, but only because it was bigger!!!!!!!!!!! I will do the taste test again when a new beer comes out in a can.
I enjoy Fat Tire in the can immensely! Keep it up and bring on some more. 1554 please! Cans make me feel trashy and sometimes we all need that feeling:)
Cans are for those cookie cutter beer companies who are afraid to step outside the box and be original so they follow the trend of the market, there is only one good time to use can beer and that is when you are tubing down the rivers where they only allow cans. If this is a market that New Belgium is wanting to reach i would say to put the blue paddle, Mothership, skinny dip in the can as you have already put the tire in the can.
I love the beer in the can, and the philosophy behind it. The cans are lighter, easier to recycle and much more convenient if you're enjoying the outdoors. And for those of us who started out buying $1 PBRs in a Brooklyn dive bar, the can holds a bit of nostalgia too!
WHY WHY WHY would you ruin a great beer..............................................wow your marketing and Brewmaster have to be off your rocker!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
After sampling Fat Tire in a can today I am all for it! This would allow me to bring my favorite New Belgium Beers in places that don't allow glass. In addition, if I want to take Fat Tire on a hike or backpacking trip an aluminum can is easy to crush and pack out but a bottle is not. Also a can is less weight.
Can't wait to see them back in Tennessee.
i think cans are an easy way to reach the masses. why would anyone hate a can, its still good beer made by a good brewer. if you dont want a can- dont buy it. cans are easier to ship, which will make NB beer available in more places. plus im 25 without a whole lot of money to spend, when i need a lot of beer i go for the cans(or my home brew). ide rather see someone drinking a can of NB beer than any miller/coors/busch.
its not gonna magically turn into budweiser if you put it in can, you people need to relax and have a cold one.
on a side note, i love that i can only find mothership wit in bombers. i just voted for it cause its my fave NB brew...
New Belgium is not Budweiser. Putting a good beer in a can is still a good beer. Because modern cans are lined there should be no metallic off flavors. I've also heard that there is less dissolved O2 in canning as well. In addition, UV light cannot penatrate cans and skunk it (see Corona, etc.). Plus cans are lighter allowing NB to deliver more beer with less gas, or biodiesel, or whatever. Lastly beer is not supposed to be drank directly from the bottle/can. Beer is best poured into an appropriate glass then enjoyed. So who really cares what it comes from. I'm all for it!
Like the others, I initially said no way and looked for the 'None of the Above' voting button. After a few seconds of repose, I realized that there is a sound reason for a can of Fatty. Several places either are not conducive for the use of glass such as lakes, beaches, concert in the park (too hard to hide the bottle) etc. or where glass is just not allowed, like concerts, ballparks, or Yosemite NP.
I agree 100%. There are many things wrong with cans. First, quality beer does not come in a can...it simply does not happen. Second, although aluminum is also recyclable, glass requires less energy and there is less loss of material. In many cases, glass bottles can be reused without any energy expenditure except a good washing. Leave aluminum to the bicycle manufacturers and stick to glass. You don't want your beer to be on the shelf with the budweiser cans...
I know may of you are going to hate me for this but I have a burning question that has to answered by someone. I love New Belgium. I think that La Folie is pure art and that Mothership and Abbey are incredible beers. I like most of the other beers too. However, I absolutely abhor Fat Tire. I think it is the worst beer from NB by far. As a resident in Fort Collins I have given FT so many chances and it tastes increasing worse everytime I have it. I think that maybe the biscuit favors are just way out of balance for me. I know there must be other NB fans that feel this way too? For all you people that love Fat Tire can you explain to me what it is that you love so dearly? On another note: Way to go with the return of Beire de Mars. I love a brewery out there who isn't afraid to bring Brettanomyes to the masses and educate our palletes!
As far as your regular follies, Sunshine would be great for summer.. and I know Mighty Arrow is seasonal, but you should really go full speed ahead on it. it's a GREAT beer with a great story! GO MIGHTY ARROW!!!!
Good beer doesn't automatically turn into bad beer when you drink it out of a can. There is another brewery (newer and smaller) in Boulder, CO called Upslope which only cans their beer and it is delicious! It's surprising to open a can and taste a quality product rather than the expected watered-down beer-flavored liquid you usually get. Just give it a chance and be open-minded before making a judgment. NBB is my favorite brewery by far and I know they won't sell out and sacrifice the quality of their products just to make a buck.
I have had FT in a can and thought it was just fine. Much easier to take skiing, hiking etc. Would challenge skeptics to do a blind taste test. Also, didn't NB change the recipe a bit to somehow counter the effects of canning?
Skinny Dip is the obvious beer to can next. It's touted as the beer for summer (about time someone made a decent, lighter beer despite what Sam Adams thinks of their piss-water) but you can't take it to any of the summer places in a bottle (beach, pool, park, sailing etc.)
Its simple really. When you download 1% for the Planet: The Music, Vol. 1, you help save the planet. All 1% member companies give 1% of sales each year to environmental non-profits around the world; NBB is a 1% member.

Has anyone forgotten... kegs are just big cans.
So the whole "taste" issue is bunk. Anyone had Wittekerke, Dale's Pale Ale, several other craft beers in cans? They're all good.
"Dale's Pale Ale in a can, recently was chosen as the best beer in a 25-beer blind tasting of pale ales by a panel for the New York Times."
And here's more info on cans: http://thebeerguys.blogspot.com/2006/05/ok-seriously-why-cans.html
Welcome to North Carolina!!!
I just heard Fat Tire will be available in Greensboro. Tell me what stores it will be available in. Cheers!!
SKINNY DIP!!!
