I'd nominate WaterWatch of Oregon. Their Free the Rogue campaign in southern Oregon has been a real success in removing dams on the Rogue River. Last year saw Gold Hill and Elk Creek dams come down. This year it's Savage Rapids Dam, one of the largest dam removals ever undertaken in the US. With any luck, Gold Ray Dam will come downext. You can check out a video at www.waterwatch.org.

American Rivers is the ONLY non-profit I know of that works relentlessly to protect and preserve rivers in the U.S. and around the world from all types of impact including impacts revered by many as insignificant (i.e. recreational impacts). Other non-profits also have the right wording as their mission but some only serve a particular interest (i.e. paddling).

I noticed Heal the Bay's not on this list -- any way to add them? They're ALL about clean waters for swimmers, surfers, divers, etc. at the beach, and in coastal watersheds in SoCal, like Malibu Creek and Compton Creek.

Barton Springs is one of the major attractions that draws people to Austin and makes Austin a desirable place to live. This doesn't even address the wildlife that is supported by the springs. Save Our Springs is a worthwhile organization that has fought hard over the years to protect the beauty and wildlife in Austin and the surrounding areas. Its an uphill battle with capitalists yapping at our heal thinking only of short term financial gain. Protecting the springs is about so much more than clear fresh water, its about sustaining life...of both the salamanders and the people who live here.
