After some late night heroics performed by my new friend Nick in Shepardstown WV, I had a new crank..kind of, and a ‘new’ chain. He looted a chain from an old 1958 Schwinn Racer to complete the job.
My first few pedal strokes were done gingerly, I didn’t want to stress out the 50 year old chain, didn’t know if it would hold up. But after a few miles it felt strong, and I was on my way to Washington DC!Read more

The C&O trail has been pretty, scenic and very….problematic!! It’s rough, full of muddy holes, branches, rocks and is bumpy as hell, it’s no trail for a cruiser. I miss you KATY! Where are you my love!

I woke up to rain this morning, grey poopy skies were the last thing I wanted to see

There are a lot of horses in these here parts, this is the home of the Derby after all. After a hectic ride out of Louisville on some busy streets I finally made it into the country, and endless horse farms. Beautiful rolling green hills with horses on all sides. I’m used to seeing cows, but today it was mostly colts.

I said a sad farewell to Katy today, she’s been good to me but it’s time to move on, It’s not her, it’s me…
Last night I met up with a handful of local bike enthusiasts in Columbia. We drank New Belgium brews ($100 bar tab, nice!) and had ourselves a cozy little evening. As I headed home to Steve’s house (my host) who is way cool by the way, it started to pour, no bueno. I looked on the radar when I got back and it said “90% chance of rain for Tuesday” Boooo!

I’m loving life here in Kansas! I’ve actually really enjoyed everyday in this flat, basketball loving Midwest state. Yes it’s been hot, and yes it’s been windy but 99.9 percent of the people I’ve met are so nice! Hats off (or helmets off) to you Kansas!
I’m half way to DC, yeehaa! And in honor of this occasion, I’m going to guilt you into donating money to Community Cycles, see video.
I’ve been warned about the impending humidity many times by many people. I knew it would come, just not overnight! Yesterday was a nice DRY 105, and today was a nice WET 95, what a difference. My clothes were soaked all day, and wet shorts creates extreme chaffing, Ouchie!

We had one crazy night in Las Vegas…not really. Las Vegas New Mexico is quite a bit different from Las Vegas Nevada. It’s a quaint little town off I-25 with a cozy historic downtown, little old adobe houses and a great soda fountain with awesome ice cream!
Today was a great day! It started off right as I slept in the most comfortable bed in the world (thank you Brian Hart). Brian also decided to ride out of town with us on his 60 pound sky blue New Belgium cruiser.
So my new buddies Seth and Jeff decided to help me ride out of town today. They even made a great breakfast beforehand, what kind of college kids wake up at 6am in the summer? These guys do! They are so cool!

I danced in the rain last night! For the first time since starting this trip I experienced a rain storm in the desert. It was very cozy.
Cool article in Draft Magazine about the ride
It got windy last night in the desert, so windy that my tent turned into a giant kite. Usually I love to fly kites, but it’s hard to sleep in one.

This morning I met up with some super cool bike advocates in Scottsdale and we had ourselves a mini cruiser ride through town on some great bike lanes. And no cruiser ride is complete without a little beer stop…at 11am
Each day seems to be getting hotter! I think it was 106 today, but it’s not as bad as you think, it’s a dry heat ? Why do people always say that? It’s still freakin 106!
It’s hot! I don’t know exactly how hot, but to give you an idea, I drank two and a half gallons of water and never went to the bathroom!
The bike made it into the box...barely and I made it to my gate...barely and now I'm ready to ride...barely.
