Have you ever heard the word Vrienden before? It's Flemish for friends and it is also the name of a new beer. The beer came about as a collaboration between New Belgium and the Allagash Brewing Company
. It is crazy and crazy good. So it's time to get used to the word and start rolling your R's because you are going to want to become familiar with it (maybe saying it to yourself over and over would help).
This beer starts with some Colorado grown pale malts and caramel-80 malts for the mash and then some roasted endive and hibiscus flowers were added, followed up with target and cascade hops to create a little balence. It was fermented with a Belgian ale yeast and then things got awesome. Lactobacillus and Allagash's house Brettanomyces were pitched in there and then it was time for some good ol' fashioned New Belgium wood-foudre aging. This beer is slightly sour, very dry, and stronger than an old-tyme strong man
at an 8.5% ABV. Look here
to see if it's available where you live (or at least close to where you live) and if not, hurry to some place that it is (such as the Liquid Center right here at NBB HQ), because it's super great. And once you taste Vrienden
the word will start rolling off your tongue with ease.
