Vader lives in our wood cellar

The wood cellar is filled with an unusual energy—a foeder force of sorts. That foeder force creates our sour beer, makes it grow. It surrounds us, it binds us. When you walk through the foeder forest you feel that force around you; between the foeders, the stainless tanks, the rock-climbing wall.

But—as our wood cellar crew has warned—beware the dark side of the foeder force. Anger, fear, aggression; the dark side of the foeder force are they. Easily they flow, quick to join in a fight. If once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny, consume you it will.

Well, it’s not all that dire. Meet Vader, pictured above, one of the foeders inside our wood cellar here at New Belgium (
yep, we name our foeders). While the fun, light side of the foeder force is strong in our wood cellar, this charred-looking foeder might have inspired wood cellar manager Eric Salazar to consider anger, fear, and aggression when it was introduced into the cellar.

“Dark from the beginning but filled with the light, Vader was our last foeder to hydrate and some argue our most temperamental,” he says. “The delicate flavors and aromas he’s producing now tell us he was worth the fight."

If only Salazar was there with Obi-Wan and Anakin during the Duel on Mustafar, maybe Anakin would have been persuaded back to the light (and not lost his limbs in lava and transformed into Darth Vader).

Salazar wouldn't have let this happen.

So why is Vader charred? Well, it’s not. The foeder is mysteriously stained but it does look charred—“crispy like Anakin Skywalker."

So there you have it. Vader is alive and well in New Belgium’s wood cellar. True story.
