New Belgium Brewing and J. Wakefield Brewing Combine Forces to Create a Grilled Pineapple Berliner Weiss

This beer is the inaugural release of ‘Beers with Vrienden’, a collaborative endeavor with brewing friends

Fort Collins, Colo., May 7, 2015 New Belgium Brewing’s Beers with Vrienden, which means friends in Flemish, is the brewery’s new two-part collaboration program, kicking off with J. Wakefield Brewing out of Miami, FL. The first part of this endeavor starts at New Belgium with the initial collaborative brew, followed by a release celebration and reciprocal brew at Johnathan Wakefield’s brewery.

On May 8th Johnathan will come to Fort Collins, Colo. to brew with the New Belgium team. Together they will create a Grilled Pineapple Berliner Weiss. The beer will then be kegged and shipped to Miami where it will be sold at select bars and restaurants in the surrounding Wynwood neighborhood and beyond. New Belgium’s Liquid Center will also have it on tap. The second part in the collaboration will take place on Johnathan’s home turf in Miami from June 11th-13th and will include several local celebrations.

“When we first met Johnathan he was a well-known homebrewer in Tampa,” said Lauren Salazar, New Belgium’s Specialty Brand Manager & Wood Cellar Blender. “He’s now known as the tropical fruit king of Florida and knows everything about brewing with exotic fruits! He’s even dubbed the term ‘Florida Weiss’ for all his amazing tropical fruit Berlier Weiss beers. He’s an incredible brewer, super passionate and this collaboration is perfect to kick off Beers with Vrienden. We’re going to be grilling pineapples on the back deck here at New Belgium – epic all around!”

Grilled Pineapple Berliner Weiss will have a huge fruity pineapple nose, pour a hazy golden, and offer a sweet-tart bite and juicy, crisp finish. It’ll be a sessionable sour with a light body and tropical fruit notes and come in at 3.8% ABV.

“My favorite thing about collaborations is the opportunity to generate great ideas between other brewers and turn them into new creative beers,” said Wakefield. “The thought of putting grilled pineapple in a Berliner is a crazy idea, but one I think will be very well received. Berliner Weisse is a great platform for fruit and this version will be a perfect beer for the summertime.”
